Wentworth, Buronga and Gol Gol Sewer Assets

Wentworth Shire Council would like to inform the residents of Wentworth, Buronga and Gol Gol that Contractor Insituform will be undertaking sewer relining work. Sewer relining was successfully completed in Wentworth during 2025 and the continuation of the program is planned to expand into Buronga and Gol Gol during 2026.

This years program consists of a further two kilometres in Wentworth and one kilometre across the Buronga/Gol Gol sewer system.

Sewer relining will commence Monday 3 August 2026, continuing through to Friday 11 September 2026. Works are not expected on weekends and hours will be kept to between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. Brief roadwork diversions may be in place for some roads and laneways to enable access to complete the relining. Access to some properties will also be required for those properties that have sewer mains located in backyards. The Contractor will make additional contact with residents and business owners prior to accessing private property.

Wentworth Shire Council is set to transition to a new 3-bin kerbside collection service commencing 5 October 2026. This major service upgrade leverages the recently completed expansion of the Buronga Landfill and marks a significant step toward operational sustainability.

The introduction of the 3-bin system is designed to improve resource recovery and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. The initiative aligns with the Halve Waste regional partnership and NSW government mandates.

Wentworth Shire Council Mayor, Daniel Linklater, noted that the change will ensure the long-term efficiency and sustainability of local waste services.
“The recent expansion of the Buronga Landfill has secured our region’s waste capacity for the future, but infrastructure is only half the solution,” Mayor Linklater said. “By separating food and garden waste, recyclables, and general waste at the source, residents can divert valuable materials from landfill, reduce environmental impacts, and contribute to a circular economy.”
The transition to the 3-bin system is being delivered in partnership with Halve Waste, a regional education and waste reduction program. Established in 2010, Halve Waste now supports 18 councils across the region in implementing local solutions to divert household waste away from landfill.
The initiative’s overarching goal is to reduce regional waste sent to landfill by 80% by 2030. By adopting the 3-bin system, Wentworth Shire residents will play a crucial role in meeting these targets, helping to recover valuable resources, reduce methane emissions, and extend the lifespan of the newly expanded Buronga Landfill.

How the 3-Bin Service Works

Starting from 5 October 2026, eligible households will separate their waste into three distinct categories:

• Food and Garden Waste (Lime Green Bin Lid): Dedicated to food and garden waste. Separating this waste allows valuable materials to be diverted from landfill and composted locally.
• Recycling (Yellow Bin Lid): For standard recyclables including paper, cardboard, rigid plastics, and steel/aluminium cans.
• General Waste: For remaining non-recyclable items.
  
  Please note: While some current general waste bins have a dark green lid, all new rollout areas and future general waste bin replacements will receive a bin with a red lid to align with the new service.

Bin rollout

During the last two weeks of September, eligible properties will receive a new 240L Food and Garden Waste bin, a kitchen caddy, and a roll of 150 Council-approved compostable liners to assist with collecting food scraps. An additional roll of liners will be supplied on a yearly basis for the first three years of the service. Households will also receive a 240L Recycling Bin, a collection calendar, fridge magnets and other key information.

Collection Schedule

Kerbside collections will continue to be operated by Council’s contractor, Cleanaway, with your regular weekly collection day remaining unchanged.
The new 3-bin service will operate on a fortnightly rotation:

• Week 1 (5 October – 7 October 2026): General Waste and Food and Garden Waste bins.
• Week 2 (Commencing 12 October 2026): Recycling and Food and Garden Waste bins.
  
  Please note: Collection days may be subject to change depending on public holidays. A detailed collection calendar will be provided to all households prior to the rollout.

Community Drop-in Information Sessions

To help the community prepare for this transition, Council is hosting a series of drop-in information sessions across the Wentworth Shire between 24 July and 29 August 2026.
These sessions will provide practical information on how to correctly sort household waste (with a focus on food and garden waste) and explain new collection schedules. Council staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance. Residents are encouraged to attend any of the following sessions:
