New license application process for asbestos and demolition

The NSW Government is making it easier and faster to apply for asbestos and demolition licences in NSW by digitising the application process.

The new, easy-to-use digital application will save individuals and businesses time by reducing the number of steps and the amount of paperwork needed, and moving away from postal applications.

Applicants will still need to book an appointment at a Service NSW Centre to prove their identity in person within 30 days of submitting the application.

The new digital process only applies to new asbestos and demolition licence applications. For renewals, licence holders will need to follow the previous process.

Which licences does this affect?

Asbestos

  • Class A friable asbestos.
  • Class A friable asbestos fire doors and safes only.
  • Class B non-friable asbestos.

Demolition

  • Demolition licence (DE1).
  • Restricted demolition licence (DE2).

How to apply

Willow Bend Caravan Park to close for upgrade

Willow Bend Caravan Parkis now closed for upgrade works to start on 1 February 2022.

Wentworth Shire Council decided at 26 May’s Extraordinary Meeting to close the park for upgrade works to proceed following consultation with the Caravan Park Managers.

This was in preference to the previously anticipated two-stage approach in order to streamline the construction phase and cause less disruption to the caravan park business.

With the recent announcement of grant funding from the Drought Community Extension Fund and Crown Reserve Improvement Fund Council can now facilitate the required upgrade in a single stage approach.

Wentworth Shire Council is expecting plans and specifications for the upgrade to be completed by 30 June 2021.

At the May Ordinary Council Meeting Council resolved to endorse the detailed site plans of the project works to enable the project to advance to the tender stage.

To date Council has successfully delivered preliminary works including a feature survey of the site, fencing, the demolition of the old residence and the replacement of the residence and office.

Also undertaken has been the relocation of the old camp kitchen, its replacement, and an electrical upgrade to support the future expansion as well as filling of the site for protection up to a 1 in 20 year flood event.

Wentworth Shire Council Mayor Susan Nichols looked forward to the upgrade’s completion.

“In this COVID-19 affected era we have seen how important regional tourism will be now that international travel isn’t a viable option,” Cr Nichols said.

“By closing down the Willow Bend Caravan Park and completing the upgrade in one stage we can get the park back to full capacity sooner and welcome more visitors to stay in our Shire.”

Wentworth Shire Council has hailed this week’s Murray Darling Association National Conference in Wentworth a resounding success.

Wentworth hosted the event, which ran from Sunday 16 May until Wednesday 19 May, at the Wentworth Civic Centre with more than 150 delegates and speakers attending to discuss important matters relating to the Murray-Darling Basin.

Council received thoroughly positive reviews from the Murray Darling Association, delegates at the conference and the wider community who took advantage of local displays and markets in the Civic Centre’s foyer on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“It was fantastic to see the Civic Centre a hive of activity this week for the conference, which was greatly supported and should provide a significant boost to our Shire’s economy,” Wentworth Shire Mayor Susan Nichols said.

“I would like to congratulate the Murray Darling Association, Wentworth Shire Council Staff and all other stakeholders on making this event as great as it was, as well as the Wentworth community for being so welcoming and willing to showcase everything our region has to offer.

“It was equally fantastic to be able to show the potential of the Civic Centre, whose own redevelopment is out for public exhibition, during the conference.”

This week’s event included afternoon tea on the PS Ruby on Sunday followed by a Civic Reception at the Old Wentworth Gaol, a study tour to the Menindee Lakes and Pooncarie on Monday and a gala dinner aboard the PV Mundoo on Tuesday night as well as the two days of the conference itself in the Civic Centre’s auditorium.

The Abbotsford Bridge at Curlwaa will be closed in mid-July for up to 10 weeks, weather permitting, as Transport for New South Wales carries out essential maintenance work to upgrade its mechanical lift span.

This work will improve safety and reduce the need for future maintenance on the bridge.

The first stage of the work on the NSW Government funded $2 million project will begin in mid-June, with night closures of the bridge before it is closed 24/7 from mid-July.

Detours will be in place during the work with motorists advised to cross the Murray River via the George Chaffey Bridge between Mildura and Buronga.

Smaller vessels will still be able to pass underneath the bridge truss spans.

Transport for New South Wales will provide further advice and details closer to the start of works.
