Wentworth Shire Council welcomes new Australian citizens and announces 2026 Australia Day Award recipients

Wentworth Shire Council welcomed four new Australian citizens and recognised the achievements of outstanding community members at its Australia Day 2026 Ceremony, held on Sunday 25 January 2026 at the Wentworth Visitor Information Centre Conference Room.

Mayor of Wentworth Shire, Councillor Daniel Linklater, officiated the citizenship ceremony, formally welcoming Garth Bowen, Julie Kern, Frederick Bowen and William Lloyd as Australia’s newest citizens.

The ceremony formed part of Australia Day celebrations held across the nation. As at 31 December 2025, more than 25,450 people from over 160 countries had been invited to attend citizenship ceremonies hosted by local government councils and other organisations as part of Australia Day 2026.

Mayor Linklater said it was a privilege to welcome new citizens to the Wentworth Shire community.

“On behalf of the Wentworth Shire community, I warmly welcome our newest citizens who have chosen to make Australia their home. It is an honour to share such an important milestone with them and their families,” Mayor Linklater said.

The ceremony also included the presentation of the 2026 Australia Day Awards, recognising individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to the community through volunteering, sport, cultural initiatives and community leadership.

Nominees for the 2026 Citizen of the Year Award were Bill Wheeldon, Louise Theodore, Gaye Lamb, Col Kerin and Marg Whyte.

The Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Gaye Lamb in recognition of her extensive and long-standing contribution to the Wentworth local government area. Over four decades, Ms Lamb has dedicated her time and expertise to a wide range of community organisations and causes, including public health, environmental initiatives, history and heritage, women’s advocacy and journalism. Her service has supported organisations such as the New South Western Standard, the Country Women’s Association and the Wentworth Show, reflecting a sustained commitment to the community marked by dedication, resilience and selflessness.

The Young Sportsperson of the Year Award was presented to Charley Stonham. Charley, who has recently completed her primary education at Pooncarie Public School, was recognised for her determination, resilience and commitment to sport. Despite living with a disability, she has participated in local, district and state sporting carnivals and consistently demonstrates sportsmanship, fairness and encouragement of her teammates.

The Organisation of the Year Award was presented to Pooncarie v Anabranch Raising Awareness for Mental Health. Established 12 years ago, the group has grown from a single cricket match raising awareness for men’s health into a broader community initiative promoting mental health awareness across the shire. Through inclusive events, the group has fostered conversation, connection and support, particularly during periods of floods, drought, cost of living pressures and remoteness. The group continues to raise thousands of dollars annually in support of mental health, breast cancer and men’s health initiatives.

Mayor Linklater congratulated all award recipients and nominees.

“The dedication and generosity shown by our award recipients and nominees reflect the very best of our community spirit. Council is proud to acknowledge their contributions and the positive impact they have made across our shire,” he said.

Mayor Linklater also thanked those who submitted nominations and acknowledged the attendance of Australia Day Ambassador Ms Ange Clarke.

“I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate these deserving individuals and organisations, and to our Australia Day Ambassador, Ms Ange Clarke, for joining us on this important occasion. It was an honour to welcome her to Wentworth Shire,” he said.

NEW CITIZENS & AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD WINNERS FOR 2023

Wentworth Shire Council has welcomed three new citizens to Australia and announced the Australia Day Award winners at their Ceremony held at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club in Dareton on 25 January 2023.

The Australia Day 2023 Awards had very worthy nominees, each of whom have made outstanding contributions to the community through volunteering, sports, culture and the environment. Nominees for the Citizen of the Year award included Ross Hall, Clair Bates, Gwen Wilkinson and Jan White.

The Wentworth Shire Council 2023 Citizen of the year is Gwen Wilkinson. Gwen is a Life Member of the Gol Gol Rural Fire Service, a wildlife carer for almost 35 years with Sunraysia Wildlife Carers Group and an extremely active member at the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens since 2012.

Other award winners on the night included Daniel Hawkins, Young Citizen of the Year, Bec Marshall Sportsperson of the Year, Kalesita Burton Young Sportsperson of the Year.

Mayor Tim Elstone also conferred citizenship on Miss Anna Kuus, Mrs Brooke Mobilio and Ms Ludivina Macalla.

I also congratulate the 2023 award winners and of course, all of the deserving nominees. I would also like to acknowledge those who took the time to submit such worthy nominations. In addition, I would like to thank our Australia Day Ambassador, Dr. Clio Cresswell and Senator Perin Davey for being part of our celebrations. It was a pleasure to have them attend.

Wentworth Shire Council Australia Day Awards 2022

Wentworth Shire Citizen Of The Year 2022 Jeanette Stephens with Mayor Tim Elstone.

Jeanette Stephens has been announced as Wentworth Shire’s 2022 Citizen Of The Year at Tuesday night’s awards ceremony at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club.

Jeanette has been heavily involved in the Anglican Parish of Wentworth Dareton as Parish Secretary and was Sunday school teacher for 45 years, also furthering her studies in an effort to improve the Parish.

She has always displayed a strong support of school communities through involvement with P & C associations, tuck shop duties and voluntary reading with students.

Jeanette has been local her entire life and during this time has fostered 16 children of varying backgrounds, whilst having three daughters of her own.

Also nominated for the award were Dianne Pitt, Daryl Edwards, Margaret Morrison and Andrew Lamb.

Young Citizen Of The Year was awarded to Jess Doidge.

Jess was a member of the Wentworth Area Skate Park committee, raising money for the Wentworth Skate Park and was a helper at all of their fundraising events.

She has been a karate student for five years, earning her brown belt and therefore the responsibility of assisting junior karate students in learning stances, positions and Carta as well as
respect for themselves, the community and Renshi.

She has also been involved in several sporting clubs such as the Cobras Basketball Club and Coomealla Wentworth Cricket Club.

Through school she has volunteered at Murray House by assisting staff, spending quality time with residents and performing for residents as part of the school band.

In 2021 Jess was the Wentworth Public School Vice-Captain and assisted the schools P & C at a number of fundraising events.

Also nominated for this award were Kayla Hayes and Pippa Heeps.

Nicholas Witte was announced the Young Sportsperson Of The Year.

Nicholas is a junior member at Wentworth District Tennis Club where he assists with clubhouse and ground maintenance, plays in the B1 & B2 Pennant Teams and was runner up in singles and doubles for the Junior Boys Club Championships.

He is also a dedicated member of the Coomealla Wentworth Cricket Club in the Under 14s side and trains with the Curlwaa Islanders senior men’s team where he is always willing to be a substitute fielder for their team or the opposition if required.

Nicholas competes in school-based sports, was part of the school representative soccer team and is always encouraging other students to participate.

Also nominated were Isabelle Newton and Brock Lyall.

Wentworth Shire Mayor Tim Elstone congratulated all award winners and nominees.

“Our great communities rely on the efforts of people such as Jeanette, Jess and Nicholas, as well as the respective nominees in each category, to make them tick,” Cr Elstone said.

“Without these people, and others like them, Wentworth Shire would not be such a wonderful place to live and we hope they will continue their terrific efforts to improve our communities.”

Eight new Australian citizens were conferred as part of the ceremony on Tuesday night.

These new citizens are Riyalyn Ortega, Aaliyah Ortega Santos, Charles Ortega Santos, Angel Cano, Salina Chirozva, Lisa Hutchinson, Zaihasra Imandin and Yi Chun Liao.

Wentworth Shire Council also presented awards of recognition to previous serving Councillors Jane MacAllister and Bill Wheeldon.

Former Councillor Peter Nunan received an Order of Merit for his service on Council between 1991-1998 and 2012-2021.Current sitting Councillor Susan Nichols received an Order of Merit for 16 years’ service to Council, including recently as Mayor.

Former Councillor Donald McKinnon was awarded the prestigious Emeritus Mayor, for 31 years of service to Council including as Shire President in 1991 and 1992 and Mayor between 1993-2001 and 2012-14.

In total Mr McKinnon spent 14 years as Mayor and eight as a Councillor.
