Senior’s Morning Tea
The Australian Inland Botanic Gardens in coordination with Wentworth Shire Libraries, hosted a Senior’s Morning Tea on Tuesday 28 February 2023. Organiser of the day Mackenzie Seddon, Acting Team Leader Libraries, was thrilled to see over 60 seniors in attendance.
The morning tea begun with speeches by Deputy Mayor of Wentworth Shire Council, Cr Daniel Linklater and 2023 Citizen of the Year Gwen Wilkinson.
Deputy Mayor of Wentworth Shire Council, Cr Daniel Linklater said during his speech “Our community consists of 28% of people aged 60 and over, making us a Shire with a wealth of knowledge, life experience and embedded cultures handed down for future generations.” He also spoke of fond experiences throughout his life with the older generations.
Following the speeches, an assortment of sandwiches and sweets were served to attendees for morning tea by the AIBG Catering Team.
After the morning tea, the attendees were priveliged to a Tractor/Train tour of the gardens from experienced driver Vic Eddy, who has run the tour for over 8 years.
Wentworth Winedown
The picturesque Australian Inland Botanic Gardens hosted Wentworth Winedown on Saturday 25 February with raving reviews. Free attendance at the Wentworth Winedown was only made possible through the Reconnecting Regional NSW Community Events Program funded by the NSW Government.
The aim of this program was to promote the social and economic recovery of regional communities, by renewing social connections and providing a revenue-boost to local businesses, following the extended COVID-19 restrictions across regional NSW and impacts of border closures.
Wentworth Winedown provided great live entertainment from some of Australia’s top performers along with local food and wine vendors serving up a variety of gourmet options.
Local food and drink vendors served up a storm to over 3,000 attendees and included a range of options from Monak Wines, Trentham Estate, Fossey’s Gin Distillery, Cappa Stone Wines, SCAD’s Cruisin Café, The Van, El Gringo’s Mexican Street Food, Peter’s Souvlakis, Outback Almonds, Verdict Catering, Two Black Sheep, Enjoy Catering, Grazing Into Brunch and the Lions Club of Buronga Gol Gol & Friends of the Gardens Committee.
Over 5 hours of live performances from Australian artists included Alice Ivy, Allday, Mallrat and the Mildura formed Loose Bricks (now performing on multiple interstate tours). In a Q&A with the artists, they were excited to be playing a regional concert for music fans and to connect the community in one venue. A member of Loose Bricks said “Rural communities often have to travel long distances to get to see live music which is expensive and often time consuming, so events that are local provide accessible experiences for the people in those communities.”

NEW CITIZENS & AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD WINNERS FOR 2023
Wentworth Shire Council has welcomed three new citizens to Australia and announced the Australia Day Award winners at their Ceremony held at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club in Dareton on 25 January 2023.
The Australia Day 2023 Awards had very worthy nominees, each of whom have made outstanding contributions to the community through volunteering, sports, culture and the environment. Nominees for the Citizen of the Year award included Ross Hall, Clair Bates, Gwen Wilkinson and Jan White.
The Wentworth Shire Council 2023 Citizen of the year is Gwen Wilkinson. Gwen is a Life Member of the Gol Gol Rural Fire Service, a wildlife carer for almost 35 years with Sunraysia Wildlife Carers Group and an extremely active member at the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens since 2012.
Other award winners on the night included Daniel Hawkins, Young Citizen of the Year, Bec Marshall Sportsperson of the Year, Kalesita Burton Young Sportsperson of the Year.
Mayor Tim Elstone also conferred citizenship on Miss Anna Kuus, Mrs Brooke Mobilio and Ms Ludivina Macalla.
Mayor of Wentworth Shire, Cr Tim Elstone said “On behalf of the Wentworth Shire community, I warmly welcome our new citizens to the Wentworth Shire and to Australia. I also congratulate the 2023 award winners and of course, all of the deserving nominees. I would also like to acknowledge those who took the time to submit such worthy nominations. In addition, I would like to thank our Australia Day Ambassador, Dr. Clio Cresswell and Senator Perin Davey for being part of our celebrations. It was a pleasure to have them attend.
Wentworth Shire to welcome new citizens
Three Wentworth Shire residents will become its newest citizens during a special citizenship ceremony at Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club in Dareton this Australia Day Eve, Wednesday 25 January 2023 from 6:00pm.
Wentworth Shire Mayor, Cr Tim Elstone said: “Our new will join thousands of other Australians who are celebrating their citizenship. They will contribute their skills and cultural diversity to our local community, and enrich it through their hard work and participation in public life.”
Mayor Elstone will preside over the ceremony, which will also include the Australia Day Awards Ceremony and a Welcome to Country by Arthur Kirby from Barkindji Maraura Elders Environment Team (BMEET).

Breakfast in the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens
A breakfast cooked by the Buronga Gol Gol Lions Club in the picturesque Australian Inland Botanic Gardens commencing from 8:00am.
Pooncarie – Breakfast in Pioneers Memorial Park
The Pooncarie and District Development Association will hold a breakfast in Pioneers Memorial Park, Pooncarie commencing from 8:00am.
Dareton Community Brunch in the Park
The Dareton Coomealla Namatjira Community Action Group will hold a brunch in Tapio Park, Dareton commencing from 10:00am.
“I encourage everyone to not only enjoy Australia Day festivities, but to take time and reflect on what it means to be an Australian citizen. Think about how you can become more involved with your local community, to help make it a better place every day,” said Mayor Elstone.

Australia Day 2023 Ambassador announcement
Wentworth Shire Council will hold its Australia Day Citizenship and Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 25 January 2023 at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club Auditorium in Dareton from 6:00pm. The event will consist of the Australia Day Awards presentation, Citizenship Ceremony and formal proceedings, followed by a light supper.
The Australia Day 2023 ambassador for the Wentworth Shire Council is Dr Clio Cresswell, faculty member of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Sydney. Dr Clio has research interests focused on the evolution of mathematical thought and the role of mathematics in society. The fascination is mathematics as the epitome of logic, problem solving and abstract thinking. She is the celebrated author of Mathematics and Sex; known for seeing the connecting themes across spectrums. Though the maths she gets called upon to explain most of all – and that includes every single news outlet in Australia – is… what are the odds of winning Lotto!
With English parents, her early childhood was on a Greek island and school was in the south of France where she studied Visual Art. Australia and mathematics were both joyfully discovered at eighteen, where she went on to win the University Medal and focused on Painlevé equations for her Ph.D. at The University of New South Wales. Today, Clio is a very proud Australia Day Ambassador.
Communicating mathematics has become integral to her work where Clio is now called on for comment by media worldwide, always highlighting the ubiquitous mathematical element to our lives. From The B Team with Peter Berner on Sky News Live, to Conan O’Brien on his late night show on TBS in the US, to being voted one of the 25 Most Beautiful People by Who Weekly. Admittedly, the latter was back in 2001 but still not bad for a fastidious mathematician!
Clio has delivered two TEDx presentations. One in Sydney at the Sydney Opera House, and one in Budapest.
This event is open for the general public to attend. Wentworth Shire Council will publicise all award winners at www.wentworth.nsw.gov.au following the awards ceremony.
