EnergyConnect Construction – Trentham Cliffs to Sturt Highway
Elecnor Australia, on behalf of Transgrid, is installing overhead earth wire as part of the EnergyConnect project, connecting NSW, SA and Victoria grids.
Dates & times: Saturday 11 October–Tuesday 21 October 2025, 7am–6pm weekdays, 8am–1pm Saturdays. Some works outside these hours until December 2025.
What to expect: temporary stops for boats, increased construction vehicles and temporary traffic changes on the Sturt Highway, plus some light, noise and vibration from machinery.

Wentworth Shire Council is proud to have partnered with the NSW Rural Fire Service Lower Western District on the official opening of the enhanced RFS Wentworth Airbase Lower Western Zone, at the Wentworth Aerodrome yesterday. This modern, two-storey facility marks a significant step forward for regional fire safety.
The upgraded airbase features:
Two 45,000-litre water tanks
Modern radio communications
An aircraft loading pump
Office and workshop facilities
General Manager Ken Ross said, “this development represents a significant step forward in our commitment to community safety and fire response capability.”
The airbase is a vital asset not only for NSW, but also for Victorian and South Australian emergency services, strengthening the tri-state firefighting network.
The event also saw the handover of five new and enhanced tankers to the Dareton, Ellerslie, Gol Gol, Polia, Pomona and Wentworth FCC brigades—a combined investment of over $1 million—ensuring our local volunteers have the best equipment to protect the community.
Council also commends Team Leader – Civil Projects, Trevor Wilcock, on his outstanding coordination of the project. Superintendent Steve Walker AFSM, District Manager for Lower Western, presented Trevor with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of his valued input throughout the Wentworth Airbase Enhancement Project.
Councillors Sue Nichols, Brian Beaumont, and Michael Weeding were in attendance to witness the opening and vehicle handover.
Council thanks the NSW RFS Brigades and Donation Fund for their support and acknowledges the dedication of all RFS members serving the region.

New $1.2 Million Compactor Prepares Buronga Landfill for Future Expansion
Wentworth Shire Council has invested $1.2 million in a new state-of-the-art landfill compactor for the Buronga Landfill, ensuring the facility is well positioned to meet the demands of its planned long-term expansion.
The new machine, a Bomag BC 773 RB-5, has been purpose-built for landfill operations. Equipped with advanced engineering and GPS-enabled technology, the compactor will increase waste management efficiency, extend the life of landfill cells and provide accurate reporting to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
Key features of the Bomag BC 773 RB-5 include:
An articulated and oscillating design to maintain four-wheel ground contact for maximum compaction.
Offset polygonal steel wheels with 55 cast-iron teeth each, delivering optimal crushing and compacting.
Scrapers and wire cutters to prevent waste build-up and entanglements.
A Cummins X-15 turbo diesel engine with hydrostatic drive, offering proven performance, fuel efficiency and reduced wear.
Operator safety features including rollover protection (ROPS) and a positive-pressure cabin.
Trimble GPS system to monitor compaction rates and landfill cell design, supporting accurate EPA reporting and compliance with filling plans.

A spectacular immersive art installation by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro, the project will complete Munro’s vision for dual immersive art installations, Trail of Lights+FOSO in our region.
Mildura-based commercial builders Jointly have been appointed head contractor and will begin preparing the Log Bridge Road site this month. The artist’s UK-based studio team is scheduled to arrive in February 2026 to complete the installation. Set to open in April 2026, FOSO is a unique experience that will feature 80 columns of light created from cylindrical arrays of fibre optic cables. This stunning visual display will be synchronised with an original orchestral score from renowned British composer Nainita Desai.
Wentworth Shire Council is delivering the project in a significant cross-border collaboration with Mildura Rural City Council. Wentworth Shire Council is leading the project’s delivery and operational ownership, with Mildura Rural City Council providing valued strategic and technical support.
Wentworth Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Linklater said, “the start of construction is a proud moment for the Shire. Wentworth Shire is incredibly proud to lead this landmark project, which demonstrates what can be achieved through a strong and cooperative partnership with our neighbours at Mildura Rural City Council.”

FOSO will offer a spectacular visual and aural experience set against our iconic Perry Sandhills, creating a complementary experience to the contemplative journey of Trail of Lights. Together, these two installations create an unmissable multi-day attraction that will encourage longer stays and amplify the economic benefits for the entire region.”
Mildura Mayor, Cr Helen Healy, celebrated the project’s commencement and the partnership between Councils. “We are delighted to support Wentworth Shire Council on this visionary project,” Cr Healy said. “By combining our strengths, we are helping to build a cultural tourism offering that is exceptional and will draw visitors from across the country and the globe, benefiting our entire regional economy.”
FOSO is supported by funding from the New South Wales Government.

Final Stage Completed at Buronga Riverfront Precinct
Wentworth Shire Council has officially completed the Buronga Riverfront upgrade, with the opening of a new, accessible public toilet block marking the final stage of the project.
The Buronga Riverfront precinct has been transformed into a major recreational hub on the banks of the Murray River, providing families and visitors with high-quality facilities and attractions.
Mayor, Cr Daniel Linklater, said the project delivers on Council’s vision for a vibrant and inclusive community space.
“This is a proud moment for our community. Families have embraced the pump tracks and nature play area, and with these new facilities, they can enjoy this beautiful location for even longer.”
General Manager, Mr Ken Ross, said the project highlights Council’s investment in spaces that enhance daily life and visitor experience.
“The Buronga Riverfront has quickly become part of everyday life for local families and community groups, while also attracting visitors. It is a space where people can gather, exercise, relax and connect with the river.”
New Facilities Now Open
The completed precinct now includes:
A modern amenities block with accessible and family-friendly facilities
Dual sealed, all-weather pump tracks
A rejuvenated nature-based playground, restored following flood impacts
Undercover seating and picnic tables
Landscaped lawns and pathways along the Murray River
Location
The Buronga Riverfront precinct is located on the northern bank of the Murray River, adjacent to the George Chaffey Bridge. Access is via the Sturt Highway (A20), with links to regional bus services and shared pedestrian/cycle paths connecting Gol Gol, Buronga and Mildura.
Council encourages both residents and visitors to make the most of this new community destination.
Wentworth Shire Council wishes to advise residents of Wentworth that Contractor Insituform is continuing sewer relining works within the western portion of the township.
The project has already repaired more than 3.5km of sewer mains, and Council has committed to an additional 1km of relining to further strengthen this essential 1950s underground asset.
Works are scheduled for completion by late September 2025. Works are not expected to take place on weekends, with operating hours restricted to 7am–5pm.
Brief roadwork diversions may be required on some streets and laneways to enable access. Access to certain backyards may also be necessary where sewer mains are located on private property. The Contractor will liaise directly with affected residents and business owners prior to entering private property.
Council apologises for any inconvenience and appreciates the community’s patience while these important works are completed.

Wentworth Shire Council is pleased to announce the installation of six (6) new electric vehicle (EV) chargers, set to be operational for public use from August.
The chargers are located at three community sites: the Midway Community Centre in Buronga, the Wentworth Visitor Centre, and the Wentworth Riverfront. Each charger offers fast 22kW AC charging and supports all major EV models delivering reliable, convenient, and accessible charging options in the heart of the Shire.
Powered by EV network leader Chargefox, the chargers incorporate smart software that enables real-time monitoring, multiple payment options, and user-friendly features through the Chargefox app – ensuring a seamless experience for all EV drivers.
Wentworth Shire Council Mayor, Cr Daniel Linklater, welcomed the initiative, stating: “This is a positive step forward in improving local infrastructure and embracing a cleaner, more sustainable future. The new chargers will be a valuable addition to our Shire for both visitors and locals, helping support tourism while providing essential services to our community.”
Council’s General Manager, Ken Ross, said the new EV infrastructure reflects Council’s commitment to regional development. “We are proud to be delivering modern and practical infrastructure that not only meets the needs of our growing population but also enhances the liveability of our towns and villages. These chargers will improve convenience for residents and increase appeal for travellers driving electric vehicles.”
This project has been supported by the New South Wales Government through the EV Destination Charging Grant – Round 2. Under the program, the NSW Government provided $9,360.00 for each charging location, contributing to the total cost across the three sites.

New signage marks entrance to Village of Wentworth
Council has officially unveiled the new Village of Wentworth entrance signage – a vibrant and striking welcome to all who visit our region.
The design incorporates original paintings and illustrations by local artist Marg Whyte, brought together digitally by Saunders Design. The existing NSW-shaped frame has been repurposed and freshly painted to highlight the message “Where the outback greets the rivers” – depicted through the imagery of an emu meeting pelicans.
Council thanks everyone who joined the unveiling. Approximately 40 local residents attended, including Deputy Mayor Peter Crisp, Councillor Sue Nichols, Mayor Daniel Linklater, General Manager for Wentworth Shire Council Mr Ken Ross and representatives of Saunders Design.
