Wentworth Shire Council has reported high attendance and community participation over the weekend at the 70-Year Flood Rally events, highlighted by an Australian record achievement. The commemorative program drew visitors from across the nation, resulting in increased local activity and measurable economic benefits for the shire.
A central milestone of the event was the successful verification of an Australian record, with a total of 110 Ferguson tractors assembling in one location. This gathering honoured the historical legacy of the 1956 flood response, when the local community used Ferguson tractors among other machinery to build the levee banks that protected the region.
Wentworth Shire Council Mayor Daniel Linklater said the weekend demonstrated the deep connection the community holds to its shared history.
“This event was a significant milestone for our shire, allowing us to honour the resilience of the generation that protected Wentworth in 1956 while bringing substantial activity to our town centres today. The turnout from both locals and regional visitors shows how meaningful this history remains to the community,” Cr Linklater said.
Data collected from the weekend events indicate high engagement across multiple venues. Fibre Optic Symphonic Orchestra (FOSO) recorded more than 600 ticket sales for the Thursday, Saturday and special Sunday openings, while the Wentworth Visitor Centre registered over 1,400 visitors through its doors on Sunday alone. Total attendance for Sunday’s activities across the Main Street Muster, located in Darling Street and the Wentworth Wharf Precinct, is estimated at 2,500 people.
The influx of visitors provided immediate support to local businesses, including hospitality, retail, and accommodation providers. Preliminary REMPLAN economic modelling suggests the event generated a direct economic impact exceeding $600,000 for the Wentworth community.
Wentworth Shire Council acknowledges the combined efforts of the project teams, event organizers, local businesses, sponsors, and Council staff who coordinated the logistics for the weekend.
