The Australian Inland Botanic Gardens have a new website, it is located at www.austinlandbotgardens.org.

A Community Project

Unlike most botanical gardens, Australian Inland Botanic Gardens is an incorporated body administered by a committee of management. It is funded by contributions from individuals, service clubs, local governments and a grant from the Victorian Government via Parks Victoria.

The gardens are in the early stages of development

The establishment of the Gardens is a long term project and will include the four basic requirements of a botanical garden:

  • Education
  • Recreation
  • Research
  • Conservation

 

History

1983 Inaugural Meeting of the Steering Committee.
1988 Land Acquired
1991 First Planting ­ The Garden's patron, Lady Stephen and the former Governor General Sir Ninian Stephen planted the first of the Eucalyptus citriodora which line the entrance drive.
  Garnpang Homestead was offered to the Mildura Historical Society by the Richardson family. This historic pine log sheep station homestead was dismantled, transported and re­created at the Gardens. This wonderful old building now serves as a temporary visitors' centre, classroom and social centre for the Gardens. A covered barbecue area provides for lunches served on special occasions.
1992 Pump on the River and first part of irrigation system installed. Salt tolerant area planted. The Rose Garden with over 1,600 roses in formal design was established, first rows planted by Victoria's Governor Mr Richard McGarvie and Mrs McGarvie.
1993 American and European sections commenced planting.
  Garnpang handed over to gardens by Historical Society.
1995 Irrigation system completed and Asian, New Zealand, African and dry land Australian sections commenced planting.

Ongoing Fund-Raising

Public sponsorship is invited in two main areas. Nature Trail

Trees and Shrubs. $100 per tree or group of three roses and $50 per shrub secures plant of donor's choice (with Director's approval). Plant will have appropriate name plate giving plant and sponsorship details. Plants can be sponsored as memorials. All the gardens' records are stored on a computer database.

There are five permanent staff members, one of whom is an apprentice, and the provision of a workforce through TAFE Institute and employment training schemes continues to be the Gardens other source of labour.

 

Opening Times

The Gardens are open to the public:

Monday - Friday from 7.30am - 4.30pm
Saturday - Sunday from 10.00am - 4.00pm

(Gates are locked after work)

No charge is made for admission at this stage.

Donations are much appreciated.

 


Regulations

Regulations are essential to help you enjoy the Gardens. The most important ones are:

  1. Plant material is not to be removed or damaged.
  2. Vehicles are only permitted in designated car parks via the Main Entrance Drive.
  3. Dogs must be kept on a leash.
  4. The playing of ball games or throwing of any object is prohibited.
  5. Radios, musical instruments, amplifiers or loud hailers are not permitted.
  6. The public is not admitted to the nursery/maintenance area.
  7. Smoking is banned in all areas except the rear of Garnpang homestead due to the risk of fire. The mulch is extremely flammable.

Area

Total Area is 152.29 ha (376.32 acres) comprising:

  • River Frontage 42.33 ha (104.6 acres) to be developed on the waterfront as a natural recreation area and boat mooring. The clifftop is reserved for future development with the potential for facilities such as a restaurant etc.
  • Fenced Area 109.96 ha (271.72 acres) of Mallee sandhill country over clay/limestone base on north side of River Road.
  • Initial Development 49.5 ha (122.32 acres) consisting of 26 ha (64.25 acres) of Dryland Gardens and 23.5 ha (58.07 acres) Irrigated Gardens.

 

Friends of the Garden

In 1989, at the instigation of the Committee of Management, a "Friends of the Gardens" organisation was formed. Members have been involved in fundraising, social events, acting as tour guides, and working bees, maintenance and specific projects.

Location

The gardens are located on River Road approximately 5km from Buronga at Mourquong.

The nearest major centre is the City of Mildura which is located in the north west of Victoria, Australia.
