WENTWORTH SHIRE SEEKS GRANT FOR BASIN COMMUNITIES
Monday, 7th September, 2009

Wentworth Council has submitted an application for funding as part of the Federal Government’s Strengthening Basin Communities Program.

Penne Wong, Minister for Climate Change & Water, announced the Program in June of this year.

Wentworth Shire Council, as the lead agent, has joined the Shires of Balranald and Hay in submitting a proposal for $600,000.

The Mayor Margaret Thomson said that this funding was a significant opportunity for the three shires to revise their plans in view of the likelihood of less water being available in the future for our communities.

The Mayor went on to say that the Federal Government is implementing policies to deal with less water for the future and are now asking councils in the Murray Darling Basin to be part of the planning process.

“The funding will assist Council to assess the impacts of current policies and explore strategies for adjusting to the likelihood of less water availability.  We will be looking at short, medium and long term strategies.

“We expect to hear from the Government soon about the outcome of our submission.  I sincerely hope that we are successful in getting these funds as planning for our future is becoming more crucial as the drought continues.”
