Council's Submission for Far West Initiative

Council Draft Responses to the 10 Questions from Office of Local Government

Council’s latest draft responses (@ 27/10/16) to the 10 questions asked by the Office of Local Government about the Far West Consultation Paper are contained in the attachment.

Council is having ongoing discussions with politicians, Minister Toole, the community and other councils and is likely to modify its position prior to the due date for the submission to the Consultation Paper, being 16/12/16.

Council is still encouraging residents to put in a submission by the due date but asks that it liaises in early December with the Office of the General Manager to get the latest on Council’s position.

Council will endeavour to make available Council’s submission prior to the due date.

Far West Reform Update

28 Oct 2016 5:01 PM -

The Mayor and GM met with the Minister for Local Government on 18 October about the Far West Initiative.

At that meeting it was indicated that the due date for submissions to the FWI consultation paper was likely to be put back to a date in November due to the rains over recent few weeks in the Far West.

However, a media release by Minister for local Government, the Hon. Paul Toole, received by the General Manager on Friday 28 October at 3.50pm states that the new submission date is now 16 December 2016.

The Mayor said that the meeting was a good opportunity to hear about the Far West reform process directly from the Minister.  “Since the September Council elections five new Mayors have been elected and we needed to be briefed on the Minister’s views.  A change of due date is also an indication that the Minister has acknowledged the strong requests from the community for more time to deal with submissions.

The Mayor went on to say that Wentworth Shire Council would continue to liaise with the other seven councils in the Far West and would finalise points of agreement with them.

In view of the new submission date residents who have not already made a submission about the consultation paper are asked to contact Council directly or visit the Council’s website regularly for updates.  As stated at the public meeting in Dareton on 10 October 2016 Council will assist residents who wish to make a submission.
