There are two aerodromes in the Shire.

  • Wentworth Aerodrome
  • Pooncarie Aerodrome

Wentworth Aerodrome

The Wentworth aerodrome is situated about five kilometres from the town of Wentworth on the Old Renmark Road.

Council opened a refuelling system at the Wentworth Aerodrome in late January 2005.
The in-ground storage tank has a 12,000-litre capacity that can easily cater for the aerodrome's present refuelling demand. The bulk storage is also expected to be able to service any increased demand in the foreseeable future.

Council's has its own refuelling card system that has proven popular for both local and interstate aviators who are now availing themselves of the refuelling facilities.

An application for the Fuel Card is available by contacting Council's Operations Department on (03) 5027 5040.

Look for McKinnon Drive, named for long-serving Mayor, Don McKinnon, a keen aviator.

The aerodrome has two runways. The main east/west strip is 1000 metres long and the cross strip, running north/south, is 800 metres in length.
Both strips are gravel with sealed turning circles at each end. There is also a sealed taxi way. Public amenities are limited to toilets.

Both runways were upgraded in 2004 with works including re-forming the gravel surfaces to improve rainfall run-off and the resealing of the turning circles and taxi ways and the hard standing area adjacent to the new refuelling facility (see separate story).

The aerodrome can cater for aircraft up to and including 5700 kilograms.
The Wentworth aerodrome supports a surprising amount of traffic, including visits by emergency services including the police and flying doctor, as well as visiting government dignitaries and officials and many private aircraft.

The aerodrome is also home to the Sunraysia Sports Aircraft Club and is usually busy at weekends for recreational flyers in light and ultra light craft.
The aerodrome is operated and maintained by Wentworth Shire Council.

There are no landing fees.
