| Oral history projectThe historical society is playing a major role in an important project to preserve the social history of the municipality. The society, in co-operation with Council's library service, is in the throes of compiling a comprehensive oral history of the area and its people. With funding from West Darling Regional Arts Council and the assistance of enthusiastic community volunteers, the project will audiotape local residents to assemble an extensive social record of the area. The assignment will go a long way to ensuring the diverse social history of the district is preserved for future generations. The project is targeting is a wide cross section of the community -- people from all walks of life, of all ages, from varied cultural backgrounds and with different life experiences. Expected to run for six months, the project is now well under way and a sizeable record has already been amassed. A copy of all the taped material and subsequent transcripts will be kept at the Wentworth Library for future reference. Wentworth Shire Mayor, Cr Warren Ward, is a staunch supporter of the project. "Projects like this ensure future generations will not have to work as hard as our own to piece together the history jigsaw," he says. Further reading: May update | February update |
