Azai delegation on its way

REPRESENTATIVES from Azai, our sister city in Japan, are on their way DownUnder.

Azai is ringed by green wooded hillsThe Azai prefecture has confirmed a delegation of 7 people will visit Wentworth Shire in May.

Although firm details are yet to be finalised, the tour dates are tipped to be Tuesday, May 7 to Saturday, May 11.

The visit follows hard on the heels of the visit by a delegation from this Shire to Azai late last year.

"We weren't expecting a return visit quite so soon," he admitted.

"But it is a great opportunity for us to forge closer links with Azai, particularly for local produce."

The Mayor is keen for delegation members to meet with local representatives from the asparagus, citrus, table grape, wine and dried fruits industries.

"This is an opportunity to get a foot hold into the lucrative Japanese market," he said.

"God knows our primary producers could use the opportunity to increase their trade.

"I am confident there will be people out there wanting to take advantage of this opportunity."

An itinerary for the visit will be put together during the next few weeks and time will be set aside for industry representations and discussion.

It is also expected to include visits to the Perry Sand Hills, the Botanical Gardens, the Coomealla Memorial Gardens, wineries, clubs and a riverboat trip.

The Shire would welcome an approach from any industry group seeking to foster closer trading ties with Japan, the Mayor said.

"We will do our best to assist."
