Community Development

wrdlogo.gif - 5kb Wentworth Shire's Community Action Teams (CATs) are now well and truly established for Pooncarie, Curlwaa/Wentworth, Dareton/Coomealla/Namatjira and Buronga/Gol Gol.

With the expiry of co-ordinator, Jill French's, contract late in 2003, the teams became self-reliant and have started to come to grips with their respective Community Action Plans (CAPs).

Ms French is proud of the progress every one of the teams has made towards becoming a proactive voice for each of their respective communities.

"The Teams have set their vision and goals and now have the tools to pursue them," Ms French said.

The CAT process also fostered the establishment of the Wentworth Regional Development Group to fill a void between local development issues and regional bodies like the Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board.

"It is essential that the local groups are linked into regional development networks and that local knowledge and information is developed to strengthen the position of the Shire," Ms French said.

The group has been structured with a membership based on representatives from all four action teams plus two Wentworth Shire Councillors - Mayor Margaret Thomson and Deputy Mayor, Cr Mark King.

Ex-officio members include Ted Lowe (DSRD) and Bill Carroll (ACC Aboriginal Employment Consultant) and other agencies as appropriate.
