MIAS welcomes equipment funding boost

The Dareton-based Men in a Shed project has welcomed funding from the Wentworth Services Sporting Club under its annual Community Development and Support Expenditure program to buy equipment for its rapidly expanding workshop.

Welcoming the $2000 grant, coordinator George Wornes described it as “a great boost to our efforts to equip our Shed and get on with the projects we have in mind”.

The money will be used to purchase several key piece of woodworking equipment, identified by Shed members as integral to success of several wood working projects they have in mind. These include a timber thicknesser, a finishing sander and a biscuit joiner.

“We will now be able to purchase new, quality equipment for the benefit of all our members,” Mr Wornes said.

The latest grant comes in the wake of nearly $3000 from the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club to cover the organisation’s insurance and another, recent $2000 grant from the Wentworth Community Bank for equipment purchases.

“We are now well on the way to equipping the workshop for woodwork and in the future we will be looking to ‘tool up’ for other activities identified by the group as being of interest. These include mechanical restoration, woodwork, metalwork (welding, lathe work etc), cut and polish gemstones, art (including painting), furniture restoration and community outreach assistance.

“Our thanks go to the Clubs, the Community Bank and Wentworth Shire Council for their ongoing support of our project.”

The Shed in the former Coomealla Packers store on the Silver City Highway at Dareton is open for activities Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am.

A monthly general meeting is held on the third Saturday of each month from 9am. The September meeting is scheduled for the 16th.
