Wentworth 150th Celebration19, 20 and 21 June 2009To celebrate 150 years since Wentworth was named, 18 June 1859NAMED BUT NOT PROCLAIMED? The forthcoming Wentworth 150th Celebrations will mark the naming of the township of Wentworth, gazetted 18 th June 1859. For reasons, which remain an historic mystery, the municipal district of Wentworth was not proclaimed until 20 years later on 23 January 1879. Named after William Charles Wentworth, who drafted of the Constitution of New South Wales, Wentworth was seriously proposed to be the capital and arsenal of Federal Australia, due largely to its central location and advantageous position at the confluence of the two greatest rivers in Australia – the Murray and the Darling. The Australian Handbook and Shippers’ and Importers’ Directory for 1884 enthuses “…The junction of the rivers alone renders it an unrivalled terminus for all the intercolonial railways……This town is the present depot for supply of the interior when the river is un-navigable, as it too often is…..” In those days the township was well served by
