Child Safety Stars in Latest Car Seat Ratings

NSW Centre for Road Safety’s Bernard Carlon has released the performance results of six child car seats to help parents and carers make the safest choices for protecting their little ones.

“Kids are our most vulnerable road users, they count on us all to make the right decisions to keep them safe from harm on our roads,” Mr Carlon said.

“Mums, dads and carers want to make safe choices for their little ones, and picking the right car seat for their child’s age and size is a great start.

“We know that children correctly fitted in approved child restraints are less likely to be seriously injured or killed in car crashes, so it’s important to give parents and carers as much information as possible so they can make an informed decision.”

Of the latest seats to be tested, the Safe-n-sound Slimm-line AHR ISOfix received four stars for protection in both forward facing and rear facing mode. This seat gives a child four star protection from birth to four years-old.

The Safe-n-sound Slimm-line AHR Seatbelt was awarded three stars for protection and three stars for ease of use in both forward facing and rear facing mode.

NRMA Acting General Manager of Public Affairs Reg Chamberlain said while it was good that so many seats had performed well in testing, parents needed to arm themselves with the right information.

“The most expensive seat isn’t necessarily the best,” Mr Chamberlain said.

“These results are broken down into protection and ease of use, and correct use could make all the difference in a crash. Parents need to make sure straps are taut and not twisted, and that the seats are correctly fitted.

“NRMA’s advice to parents is to have their child seats professionally installed at an authorised restraint fitting station.”
