2018 Australia Day Award Winners

Wentworth Shire Council congratulates each of the Shire’s 2018 Australia Day Award winners, they have shown community spirit and passion in their chosen fields.  Our 2018 Award winners were:

Citizen of the Year – John Waters

John is recognised for his involvement in many local organisations including The Wentworth Aero Club, the Vintage Car Club, the Ulysses Motorcycle Club, Dareton/Coomealla 90 Year Celebrations and Uniting Church.  He was involved in the establishment of the Men’s Shed in Dareton, of which he is a life member. 

Young Citizen of the Year – Jane Cullinan

Jane is an active member of her school and a volunteer in the wider community.  She is a Wentworth Public School Captain and has been a representative at the Mungo Youth Conference, ANZAC Day March, and City-Country Alliance to name a few.  She has also volunteered to assist the school, performs in the school band and the Wentworth Tennis Club

Environmental Award – Howard Jones

Howard is well-known across the Murray-Darling Basin and at the local, state, national and international level for his work in the natural resource management field.  He spent 22 years as Chair of the community-based not-for-profit Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group which has overseen the rehabilitation and protection wetlands covering thousands of hectares along the Murray, Darling and Edward Rivers.

Sportsperson of the Year – Mikaela Fraser

Mikaela is recognised as an outstanding athlete, excelling in a variety of sports, particularly netball.  In 2017 she took out the SFNL A-grade netball Best and Fairest Award.  She has also been awarded the Age Champion at Coomealla High School’s swimming, cross-country and athletics carnivals and the prestigious Australian Olympic Committee’s “Pierre de Coubertin” Award.

Young Sportsperson of the Year – Olivia Baird

Olivia is an active member of the sporting community and a volunteer in a number of community organisations.  She has represented Wentworth Public School in cross-country, swimming and athletics.  She also competes in athletics carnivals, swim squads, and tap and jazz dancing.
